CC13® lined 570m² drainage channel in Blaencwm
Project Overview
In July 2018, Concrete Canvas® GCCM (CC) was specified by the Coal Authority as an erosion protection liner to a series of drainage channels in Blaencwm, South Wales.
Blaencwm is the site of two collieries which were closed in the 1960s. The historical mining legacy of the area means that water management is critical to maintain the stability of the surrounding valley. In order to protect local residential properties from landslip, a 120 linear metre drainage channel was required to prevent scour of the invert from surface run-off.
Solution
CC was specified for the channel lining due to the success of its use on similar projects for the Coal Authority. Due to the anticipated flows, CC13® was specified for the works.

Summary
A total of 570m² of CC13® was installed by a team of three (two groundworkers and one excavator operator) over a period of two weeks.
The week after the project was completed, the area experienced heavy rain events. However, the surface run-off was safely and efficiently diverted into the channel and carried to the nearby Rhondda River, where it was discharged.
4 Years After Installation

In 2022, a representative from Concrete Canvas Ltd visited the site to see the condition of the channel. Once on site it was noted that the channel was in optimal condition and was operating as normal – with the channel in flow during the visit.
Later in 2023, the site was visited again to see the condition of the installation and material during cold weather conditions. Again once on site, along with the material darkening and blending into the surrounding landscape, both the material itself and the channel were in optimal condition and still in operation 5 years after it was installed.
