Solution

The sand used to fill Heritage Golf Clubs bunkers is scarce and expensive, hence contamination and ultimate replacement needs to be minimised. To prevent the bunkers from being contaminated and to allow for rain-water to drain away quickly, conventional concrete
was initially considered to line the bunkers. However, this solution was considered unsuitable due to the difficulty and inconsistency in using concrete on the steep slopes of the bunker faces.

CCX-M® was then specified to line the bunkers as it was quicker, cleaner, easier to handle and install compared to conventional concrete. Heritage Golf Course is maintained in pristine condition and cleanliness was of utmost importance during installation.

Design & Installation

  • Prior to install each bunker was cleaned, shaped and compacted.
  • Drainage sumps were installed
  • Bulk Rolls of CCX-M® were specified
  • A custom spreader beam was designed tu allow for the CCX-M® material to be deployed next to the bunkers
  • Transverse and Longitudinal Layup
  • Screwed and sealed joint used
  • Installed in temperatures ranging from 18-30oC
  • Hydration was carried out twice on each bunker to prevent premature curing.

Conclusion

A test bunker was done by Yellow Metal Machine Rental Ltd in 2021 at the Heritage Golf Club and this proved the durability and effectiveness of the CCX-M® used in a golf bunker application. Heritage Golf Club has stated they will continue using CCX-M® as a bunker liner going forward.
