Lagoon Lining

Frequently Asked Questions

Lagoon lining is the installation of an impermeable barrier to prevent liquids from seeping into surrounding ground and groundwater. It is essential where lagoons are used to store contaminated runoff, petrochemicals, mine water or process by-products, helping operators meet environmental, safety and regulatory requirements.

Concrete Canvas products provide a hard-armoured, concrete-lined surface combined with an impermeable layer, delivering containment, erosion resistance and puncture protection in a single system. This improves durability while significantly reducing installation time compared with traditional lining methods.

Yes. Concrete Canvas®,  CC Hydro and CCX® products can be installed directly over existing geomembranes or degraded liners, avoiding costly excavation and disposal. This approach maintains lagoon capacity while extending asset life and improving containment performance.

Concrete Canvas products are well suited to contaminated water lagoons, including those handling hydrocarbons, alkaline mine water and highway runoff. Its chemical resistance and low permeability help prevent harmful substances entering soil or groundwater.

Concrete Canvas® lagoon lining is designed for long-term durability, with independently verified design lives exceeding 120 years in erosion control applications. This makes them suitable for permanent or long-term containment infrastructure.

Yes. Unlike sprayed concrete, Concrete Canvas® can be installed in wet or cold conditions and even sets underwater. This allows programmes to continue during adverse weather, reducing delays and overall project risk.

Joints are sealed using either thermal welding or sealed overlaps, depending on the product type. Welded joints can be air-pressure tested on site, ensuring joint integrity, strength and low permeability throughout the lagoon lining.

A Concrete Canvas lagoon lining significantly reduces maintenance by preventing vegetation growth, resisting root penetration and protecting underlying liners. The hard surface also minimises erosion and damage from maintenance traffic.

Concrete Canvas® can be used to line attenuation ponds, firewater lagoons, petrochemical containment lagoons, mining and process water lagoons, and decanting ponds. It is suitable for both new construction and remediation projects.

Installation rates are typically much faster than traditional methods, with several thousand square metres installed in days or weeks rather than months. Faster installation reduces site disruption and helps assets return to service sooner.
