Culvert Lining | Newburn, England, UK
200m² of CC8® Installed for Scour Protection of an Old Brick-Built Culvert
Project Overview
In 2019, Concrete Canvas® CC8® GCCM was specified to provide scour protection to sections of an old brick-built culvert in Newburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. The culvert had suffered erosion and flood damage that contributed to a sinkhole beneath Spencer Court in 2012. An erosion control solution that could be installed in confined conditions without heavy plant.
Solution
CC8® was selected as a durable, quick-install scour protection liner. Its ability to be cut to size, transported in hand-portable Batched Rolls, and hydrated in situ made it ideal for the restricted culvert environment. The material provides long-term erosion resistance, abrasion protection and minimises future maintenance.
Design & Installation
-
CC8® Batched Rolls used
-
Water diverted through a 600mm pipe
-
Debris cleared and voids grouted to fill scour holes
- Secured at perimeter egdes using anchors and sealed with grout
-
Anchors used to join layers
-
Hydrated using diverted culvert water
Summary
A 4-person crew completed 200m² of CC8® installation in just 5 days, despite restricted space and limited light. The culvert lining now provides durable scour and erosion protection, safeguarding the structure against future flood events and debris impact. CC8® offered a cost-effective, low-maintenance alternative to traditional methods, proving ideal for complex culvert remediation.
