    CULVERT LINING

Culvert lining is becoming an increasingly common use for Concrete Canvas® (CC). With a more flexible and easier installation process than alternatives including bitumen coatings and poured, sprayed or precast concrete, CC also offers financial and technical advantages particularly when access is limited.

    WHY USE CC?

Traditional solutions such as sprayed bitumen and concrete are becoming increasingly prohibited by environmental agencies due to their adverse effects of local ecologies. CC’s low alkaline reserve, washout rate and embodied carbon mean it can be safely installed in live water courses without adverse effects.

Unlike expensive pre-formed GRP sections, heavy pre-cast concrete sections or pumped concrete solutions, CC can be supplied in man-portable batched rolls which do not require plant equipment or specialist contractors for installation. CC’s BBA certification means it has a design life of up to 120 years, greatly increasing the operational life and reducing life cycle costs of existing assets.

    INSTALLATION PRINCIPLES

Prepare the substrate so that surfaces are well compacted, geotechnically stable with a smooth, uniform surface.

It is important to ensure that the CC is jointed at every overlap between layers and that those layers are fixed to the substrate.

It is important to prevent water or wind ingress between the CC and the substrate, both around the perimeter of the installation and along the joints.

It is important to properly hydrate CC, using enough water for the quantity of material used and allowing for drying conditions.
