Channel Lining | A465, Brynmawr, Wales, UK

28000ft²
of CCX-M used to line irrigation canal
4 Days
on-site installation time for the canal length
96%
seepage reduction when using CCX-M

Solution

To prevent further water seepage losses, the HMRD conducted a trial with CCX-M®. The CCX® would be used to replace a dilapidated concrete lining on a section of canal that was installed in 2004 that had cracked and was leaking. Working in partnership with Titan Environmental, CCUSA supplied material and supervised its installation as a trial to demonstrate CCX®’s efficacy as an alternative to the previously specified shotcrete and membrane solution.

Summary

The ease of installation allowed HMRD to self-perform, as the material does not require specialist contractors for installation. Using the district’s own installation crew greatly reduced installation costs, which contribute to the full 50 year design life cycle savings from the reduced maintenance of a CCX-M® lined channel. The speed of installation was also key; allowing irrigation districts to install within tight windows between irrigation seasons and to allow the swift return of canal assets to operation to minimize water supply disruption.

Approximately 28,000ft² of CCX® were installed in just over four days. The canal was returned back into service less than 24 hours after installation. Seepage tests were conducted on the lined canal showed a seepage reduction of 96% and CCX® is being considered as an option for two significantly larger lining projects for the district in 2024.
