Gabion Reinforcement | Derby, UK
Flood Defence Remediation for River Derwent with CC13™
Project Overview
In March 2012, Concrete Canvas (CC) GCCM was used to remediate gabion defences along the River Derwent in Derby, UK to protect against flood waters. Over time, these defences suffered from erosion, vandalism and degradation caused by prolonged UV exposure. The integrity of the structure was compromised, making remediation essential to restore its protective function.
Solution
To address the degradation, Concrete Canvas® (CC) was selected to reinforce and remediate the damaged gabion walls.
Design & Installation
- CC13™ Bulk Rolls specified
- Material deployed in pre-cut 20m Gabion lengths
- Vertical double-layer system installed
- Re-bar staples used to secure CC directly onto gabions
- Alternative fixings included pig-tail anchors and wire ties, applied depending on access and equipment availability
- Pneumatic hog-ringing used where compressors and tools were accessible
- Toe anchor trench prepared and backfilled
- Material fully hydrated
Summary
The use of Concrete Canvas provided a rapid and effective solution for restoring the integrity of the River Derwent gabion flood defences. It offered long-term protection against further erosion and weather-related damage, extending the life and resilience of the flood barrier with minimal installation time and equipment requirements.
