Channel Lining | Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
CCX-M® installed to line a storm water ditch
Background
In August 2024, CCX-MAT® GCCM* (CCX-M®) was used to provide weed suppression and protection from erosion to a storm water drainage ditch at a rail yard in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLPU) is the oldest provider of water in the west of the USA, providing clean water, flood control and storm water management and water treatment .
At one their rail-yards, an unlined storm water drainage ditch was becoming damaged due to vegetation growth, becoming inefficient at diverting rain water and other runoff from the site, resulting in localized flooding
Solution
Traditional methods such as pesticides would have been used to manage vegetation growth within the ditch; however, the weed growth would continue after applying treatment, resulting in continuous maintenance costs.
SLPU decided that lining the ditch with CCX-M®, a hard armor solution, would be a more cost effective and permanent solution to provide weed suppression.
Design & Installation
- Vegetation growth removed and channel regraded
- CCX-M® Bulk Rolls specified
- Transverse layup
- Screwed & sealed joint
- Edges secure with pegs within anchor trenches
- Hydrated using a water truck and hose
Conclusion
The project took 3 days to complete, with a team of 5 from SLPU installing 16,368ft2 of CCX-M®. The SPLU were extremely impressed with how quickly and easily CCX-M® could be installed compared to other conventional solutions. They monitored the ditch and noted that 8 months on from installation, the CCX-M® has successfully prevented any vegetation growth within the ditch. They also noted that
the ditch continued to operate in freezing tempartures and snowy conditions.
